  • World corrugated packaging market returns to growth trajectory

Smithers anticipates major changes as $231.7 billion world corrugated packaging market returns to growth trajectory.   Global containerboard and corrugated board demand are facing a series of challenges and shifts in market dynamics across the next five years. These are expertly profiled, and quantified in the new market data report – The Future of Global Corrugated Packaging to 2029 – from Smithers.   Its in-depth analysis of capacity changes, pulp pricing, and end-user demands shows that in 2023, global containerboard production was 183.4 million metric tons, a -4% decline on 2022. These were converted into around 165 million tons of corrugated board, a decrease of more than -7% on 2022; with value reaching $224.4 billion. This reflects the end of the period of disruption in world supply that began in 2020 with Covid-19, which was characterized by disruption to global logistics impacting demand, price fluctuations leading to high inventories, and subsequent destocking.   Smithers is now able to forecast slight growth across 2024, with value increasing to $231.7 billion. This will be followed by a broader recovery in world demand at an average annual growth (AGR) of +2.5% by volume. This will see world corrugated volumes reach 190 million tons in 2029; value in the market will increase at a +3.7% AGR to $277.6 billion, at constant prices.   Many major containerboard suppliers have already invested in increased capacity, which will manifest in low operating rates across much of the Smithers forecast period. This is prompting moves that will redraw the commercial landscape for corrugated, with four of the six largest converters worldwide –  Smurfit Kappa/WestRock (Sept 2023); DS Smith/International Paper (April 2024) – pursuing multi-billion-dollar mergers. Other firms are rationalizing operations; delaying further investment, taking extra downtime or even closing older mills and box plants.   Across 2024-2029, demand for corrugated packaging will vary across the 13 different end-use sectors Smithers profiles. The packaging and transportation of food products accounted for over 46% of the consumption of corrugated packaging material during 2023, a relatively constant level since 2016, but is expected to change slightly to 47% by 2029. This will include a new surge for corrugated grades for processed foods, although growth in fresh food & produce will be slower, and electrical goods are expected to have the most attractive volume growth of all products.   Multiple opportunities are arising for corrugated materials. Their recyclability means they are increasing being favored by brand and legislators, not just in transit, but consumer-facing primary packs. This is pushing converters towards finer, premium flute grades that can compete with folding cartons in sectors such as cosmetics, confectionery, and consumer electronics.   Legislation such as the EU’s recently approved Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) are opening other opportunities. The PPWR will ban certain single-use plastic formats by 2030, including for smaller volume produce packs, and collation films for multipack beverages and food. Similar potential exists in food-service applications, is effective non-PFAS oil and grease resistance coatings can be integrated into existing corrugated lines.   Sales of retail-ready packaging (RRP) boxes are also forecast to increase rapidly due to the increased popularity of budget grocery chains in developed markets, and growth of retail infrastructure across Asia. In some instance converters will benefit from the installation of a new generation of high throughput inkjet presses for corrugated board, producing higher quality customized RRP.   The same equipment can be used to capitalize on the ongoing rise in e-commerce shippers. Twinned with design innovations these can produce visually appealing, consumer-oriented boxes that enhance branding and offer superior consumer returns. Credit

They will also co-host ProPak Asia 2024, a leading Asian exhibition showcasing technology in manufacturing, processing, and packaging.   Dr.Chutima Eamchotchawalit, Governor of the Thailand Institute of Scientific and Technological Research (TISTR), emphasized that the key to developing and increasing the value of Thai food products lies in leveraging research, innovation, and processing and packaging technology. TISTR plays a crucial role in effectively developing these innovations and technologies in the food industry. This includes research and development, promoting innovation, supporting education and training, and fostering partnerships between the private and public sectors. Through these efforts, TISTR supports the government's policy to promote Thai food products as a form of Soft Power, aiming to drive the development and growth of Thailand’s food industry on the global stage.   Regarding support for ProPak Asia 2024, TISTR has consistently collaborated with and backed the event, with a special focus on the packaging and food product technology sectors. The goal is to foster the growth of these industries into producers of top-tier food products meeting global standards. This support encompasses knowledge sharing, skill development, facilitating opportunities for private sector collaboration with the government, and advocating for the integration of technology and innovation in the food sector. At ProPak Asia 2024, TISTR will not only feature a booth but will also host five seminars covering diverse topics pertinent to food, packaging, and sustainability. These seminars will delve into areas such as carbon footprint assessment in packaging, international standards for eco-friendly plastics, enhancing food shelf life through packaging, commercializing protein products from research, and setting and using uncertainty in the development of testing methods. Furthermore, TISTR will provide consulting and research and development support tailored to promising startups within the food industry.     Dr.Charoen Kaowsuksai, Chairman of Food and Beverage Industry Club, the Federation of Thai Industries, stated that Thailand is one of the world's leading food producers. The country's strengths lie in its food and beverage manufacturing, processing, and related industries, which provide food security and generate significant revenue. Despite the ongoing growth in the food, beverage, and packaging industries, the key challenge is to develop and enhance the value of Thai food and beverage products. Modern entrepreneurs must learn and adapt to advanced production methods, using innovation and technology as the foundation to elevate product standards, improve food safety, reduce energy and production costs, and address labor shortages. Flexibility is crucial, enabling quicker and easier adjustments in production processes. Entrepreneurs should also be bold in creating new and innovative products for an ever-expanding market. They can leverage Thailand's diverse raw materials, local culinary wisdom, and unique Soft Power to add value and develop distinctive food and beverage products.   Dr. Visit Limlurcha, Vice Chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of Processed Food and Future Food Committee, highlighted the opportunities and strategies for Thailand's food and packaging industries to thrive in the global market. Despite its vast potential and purchasing power, the global market is fiercely competitive. Expanding market share necessitates a deep understanding of consumer trends and behaviors to offer products that meet demand, captivate interest, and draw in consumers.   Thailand's food exports have consistently excelled, reaching 372 billion baht in the first quarter of 2024, with a growth of 2.79%. Within agricultural food products, exports totaled 175 billion baht, growing by 8%. The top five products (with growth %YOY) were rice (growing by 49%), poultry products (6% growth), cassava products (declining by 17%), fresh, chilled, frozen, and dried fruits (declining by 13%), and shrimp products (growing by 23%). In the agro-industrial product category, exports amounted to 197 billion baht, experiencing a slight decline of 1.6%. The top five products (with growth %YOY) were canned and processed seafood (growing by 9.5%), sugar and molasses (declining by 33%), pet food (growing by 26%), wheat flour product and other processed foods (growing by 12%), and beverages (growing by 11%). For the first five months of 2024, the value of food and beverage exports is estimated to be around 620-650 billion baht, with a projected total for the year of approximately 1.55 – 1.6 trillion baht, reflecting a 3% growth compared to 2023.   For entrepreneurs, staying closely tuned to economic shifts, geopolitical tensions, and cost fluctuations—such as labor, energy, and shipping rates—is crucial. Additionally, they should monitor high policy rates and drought concerns impacting agriculture. On the opportunity side, trading partners continue to seek product stocks for food security and domestic demand. Furthermore, the global tourism and hospitality sectors are thriving, creating opportunities for new market negotiations. The devaluation of the Thai baht also provides an advantage for exports.   Regarding the organization of ProPak Asia 2024, which supports the development of Thailand's food and beverage processing industry, Mr.Sanchai Numboonnam, General Manager of Informa Markets Thailand, remarked: "Thailand ranks 12th globally in food exports. The government aims to position Thailand as the 'kitchen of the world,' from agricultural production to processing and exports, fostering a hub for food security and the research and development of future foods and high-protein plant-based foods. To support this vision and nurture Thai entrepreneurs, ProPak Asia 2024, as Asia's leading exhibition of processing and packaging technology, adopts the theme 'Empowering Sustainability Processing & Packaging Success with Ideation, Innovation, and Investment'.   Modern manufacturing is increasingly incorporating technology to enhance capabilities. For instance, IoT (Internet of Things) is used to monitor, inspect, and control production processes, optimize raw material and energy use, and reduce production losses. The development of automated machinery and factories, along with robotic technology, helps minimize errors and boost production efficiency. Additionally, AI (Artificial Intelligence) is employed to control and improve production processes, make decisions, analyze raw material quality, monitor production conditions, and evaluate machinery efficiency. • Siegwerk and Borouge collaborate to develop fully recyclable mono-material solutions to advance circular economy

Siegwerk today announced its partnership with Borouge, a leading petrochemicals company that provides innovative and differentiated polyolefins solutions, to co-develop 100% recyclable mono-material solutions to further drive packaging design for a circular economy. The goal of the collaboration is to build a pipeline of solutions enabling converters worldwide to produce advanced mono-material packaging, addressing the growing demand for sustainable packaging in the market.   “The majority of flexible packaging still consists of mixed materials and because of this multi-material structure, it is challenging to recycle it in the conventional recycling streams,” explains Dr. Stephane Bertaux, Head of Brand Owner Collaboration and Circular Economy for Southeast Asia at Siegwerk Thailand. “Here, the switch to mono-material packaging is an essential lever to ease the recycling of packaging and thus enhance its circularity.”   However, moving to mono-material structures is also accompanied by several challenges, such as ensuring reliable sealability, certain mechanical properties or thermal stability or realizing specific levels of barrier performance depending on the end-use application. “Enabling mono-material structures using Borouge’s performance polyethylene products with the combination of innovative ink and coating technologies can achieve the desired packaging outcomes. With this new way of industry collaboration, we contribute to addressing global challenges to increase sustainability and circularity. Upcycling is becoming possible through mechanical recycling, resulting in high quality recyclates to further boost circularity and lower carbon footprint versus currently used multi-material packaging, which are mostly incinerated,” adds Anton Wolfsberger, Vice President, Global Marketing, Packaging and Circular Economy, Borouge Pte Ltd.   One of the first co-development projects between the two partners will be a barrier stand-up pouch using Borealis Borstar® technology-based enhanced HDPE FB5600 from Borouge and Siegwerk’s oxygen barrier coating CIRKIT OxyBar BC1582 as well as its primer solution CIRKIT Clearprime for a smooth deinking of the laminates. “By incorporating our special deinking and delamination primer into this innovative mono-material structure with superior performance and mechanical properties, all used inks and coatings can be removed of the printed film during the recycling process resulting in high-quality recycled polyethylene that is suitable for re-use in new packaging materials,” says Bertaux.   In addition, Siegwerk and Borouge are already collaborating with selected converters worldwide to make solutions available to produce high barrier mono-material packaging combining oxygen (Oxygen Transmission Rate OTR < 1 cc/m2.day) and Moisture Vapor Transmission Rate (MVTR) barrier coatings (MWTR < 1 cc/m2.day).   Both partners are committed to contribute to sustainable and future-oriented packaging through enabling mono-material structures that can replace today’s hard-to-recycle multi-material packaging structures. While Borouge already offers a wide range of virgin polyolefins such as polyethylene and polypropylene specifically developed in regard to their recyclability, Siegwerk offers a variety of innovative ink and coating solutions that can improve the recyclability of plastic packaging without compromising on the performance and productivity required. By joining their forces, the two companies are once again underlining the importance of collaboration along the packaging supply chain to develop suitable solutions that can truly make a difference in accelerating the transformation to a Circular Economy.       Credit

  • FPA announces the 2024 Flexible Packaging Achievement Award winners

The Flexible Packaging Association (FPA), the leading advocate and voice for the growing U.S. flexible packaging industry, is pleased to announce the winners of its 68th Annual Flexible Packaging Achievement Awards Competition. The winning entries were recognized during the FPA Welcome Dinner & Flexible Packaging Achievement Awards Ceremony held Wednesday, March 20, 2024, in conjunction with the 2024 FPA Annual Meeting (March 20-22) at the Loews Ventana Canyon Resort in Tucson, Arizona.   For this year’s competition, FPA received a historic number of entries—106 package entries were submitted, with a total of 332 entries (some packages were entered into multiple categories). Twenty-two packages were honored with 37 Achievement Awards.   Special thanks are given to the 2024 competition judging panel: Danny Beard, President, Packaging Specialists; Chelsey Quick, VP, Client Success, Industry Intelligence Inc.; and Dr. Bruce Welt, Professor, Packaging Engineering, University of Florida.   The transition of products previously packaged in rigid containers to flexible packaging was demonstrated in several of the competition entries. Quick observes, “I loved some of the conversions from rigid to flexible. We're seeing some interesting applications of bringing new products into the flexibles space, which is exciting for everyone.”   Sustainability continues to be a focus of the competition. “We saw a lot of sustainable packages, but the definition of sustainability is open to interpretation, which is fair,” notes Beard. “The different types of sustainable packages and the different kinds of films that are considered sustainable are really what sets this group of products apart.”   Welt states, “One particularly interesting entry involved chemical advanced recycling and mass balance accounting. This is going to be increasingly important for the sustainability side of things.” The judges also noted an increased number of recyclable structures for medical and hospital products.   The printing quality and shelf impact of the entries this year was also remarked on by the judges, and a handful of entries were deemed worthy of framing. According to Beard, “Some of the really interesting printing techniques that were used and some of the ways that they use both the printing and the lamination of the packaging together to make the package pop was unique.”   2024 Award Recipient of Highest Achievement Award   The Highest Achievement Award is evaluated by the judges as possessing overall packaging excellence, significant attributes in all award categories, and contributing most to the advancement of the industry.     WD-40 Specialist® EZ-Pods Pouch Family   A household name in the chemical industry since 1953, WD-40 Company products are well known for their iconic aerosol packaging. In 2023, the company broke from that tradition by launching WD-40 Specialist® EZ-Pods, a degreasing product in a pod format—in sustainable flexible packaging. Without sacrificing performance, cost, or aesthetics, WD-40 settled on two recyclable flexible packaging formats: a stand-up pouch with a child-resistant closure and a sample-sized threesided sealed pouch. Both options are recyclable through store drop-off collection services.       Full list of 2024 award recipients
